“I think the way I come back to my center changed the most. Before, I understood it intellectually, but in the moment I just couldn't break through that… I think I have more capacity now.”

— Zainab

You know the conversation you need to have.

The boundary. The behavior you want to change. You may even understand exactly where the pattern came from.

And then the actual moment arrives, and something else happens.

Someone is disappointed in you. You feel misunderstood. An authority figure questions you. Money feels uncertain. Something important is at stake.

And suddenly the clarity you had yesterday is much harder to reach.

You may already understand yourself very well. You may know that you overthink, become defensive when you feel misunderstood, take responsibility for other people's emotions, or become less clear when someone's opinion matters deeply to you.

Maybe you've done therapy, coaching, personal development, meditation, somatic work, or years of your own reflection.

All of that understanding matters.

But knowing the name of a pattern isn't always the same as understanding what's actually happening underneath it.

And even when you do understand it, there's another question:

What happens when the moment is actually here?

Knowing something and having access to it when something important is at stake are not the same thing.

When certain conditions activate us, the body can begin organizing before we've consciously decided anything.

Attention narrows. The body mobilizes or constricts. Attachment and survival responses come online. A familiar behavior begins to take over.

And capacities we clearly have elsewhere become harder to reach:

Our voice.
Our intelligence.
Our boundaries.
Our perspective.
Our discernment.
Our ability to choose.

That's why “I know better” doesn't always change what happens.

You can know the boundary and still abandon it when someone you love is disappointed. You can recognize that you're becoming defensive and still hear yourself building the case. You can know what you want and lose your clarity the moment someone important disagrees.

The work isn't simply knowing more. It's seeing more clearly what's actually happening and developing greater access to yourself while it's happening.

This is human development.

We don't try to force the old response away.

We get curious about what's underneath it—what your system is responding to, what it's trying to protect, what it learned to do, and what becomes harder to reach when the stakes rise.

Then we begin developing the capacity for more of you to remain available in that moment: your awareness, intelligence, voice, boundaries, perception and discernment.

So you can respond to what's actually happening now, rather than being limited to the response that once kept you safe.

Insight helps you recognize the pattern. Development changes what becomes available while the pattern is active.

What We'll Explore

Why knowing isn't always enough

Intellectual understanding and real-time access are different capacities. You can understand a pattern and still find yourself inside it when the stakes become real.

What may actually be happening underneath the pattern

  • Sometimes the explanation you've been carrying—I'm a people pleaser. I have bad boundaries. I overthink. I shut down.—is true but incomplete.
  • A boundary may be a boundary—or it may be distance.
  • Certainty may be clarity—or protection.
  • Helping may be genuine care—and also contain our own difficulty tolerating someone else's distress.
  • Sensitivity may be an extraordinary capacity—and also become fused with automatically reorganizing ourselves around what we perceive.

The behavior alone doesn't always tell us what's happening underneath it.

Why your capacities can seem to disappear in particular situations

We'll look at what happens physiologically when something important is at stake, and why your voice, boundaries, intelligence, discernment or perspective may be readily available in one part of your life and much harder to reach in another.

What the developmental edge actually is

Not eliminating your automatic responses or forcing yourself to perform the “healthy” behavior, but developing greater capacity to stay in contact with yourself while activation is happening.

So more of your awareness, intelligence, perception and discernment become available—and reflex begins to become response.

Introducing: Why Can't I Do What I Know I Want to Do?

I'll teach what's actually happening in the moments when everything you know becomes harder to access, and then we'll work with real situations through live coaching.

How the Session Works

  • This isn't a webinar where I talk at you for 90 minutes.
  • I'll teach the core principles, and then I'll coach.
  • You can volunteer to be coached live, or simply watch the work unfold. There's enormous value in both.

Naomi Scott

I'm Naomi Scott, a Human Development Coach and creator of the EVOLVE Method™.

For nearly 30 years, I've studied human development through both Eastern and Western traditions, including meditation, attachment and developmental psychology, somatic and nervous-system work, relationships and embodiment.

I work with accomplished, self-aware people in the parts of their lives that haven't been solved with intelligence, success, insight or willpower.

I'm particularly interested in what's happening underneath what appears to be happening—because the thing we've identified as the problem isn't always the place where the work actually needs to happen.

That's what nearly three decades of this work has taught me to look for.

What Makes This Different

We won't only talk about the pattern after it's over.

In live coaching, we can slow down a real situation enough to see what's actually happening underneath it.

What changes when someone is disappointed in you? What becomes urgent when you feel misunderstood? What are you trying to protect, prevent, restore or make happen?

Sometimes what you thought was the problem isn't actually the whole problem.

That's where my work begins: seeing more accurately what's happening, and then working with what would allow something different to become available.

“You understand me deeply and understand the layers of what I say more deeply than I understand it. And while I'm saying those things, you're able to look at different angles in my mind.”— Zainab
